Dodd's Hotel signs on as Cats' major sponsor for 2010

Two local businessmen have embraced the Cooma Cats’ AFL dream by signing on as the club’s major sponsor for season 2010.
Jason Fomiatti and Daniel Shirvington, co-owners of Dodd’s Hotel in Commissioner Street, Cooma, have thrown their support behind the Monaro and Snowy Mountain’s AFL club to ensure the community can continue to enjoy playing, supporting and following local Australian footy.
While Jason is new to AFL football, Daniel has been involved with the Cats’ as a player for many years.
“For me, as a local businessman, becoming the club’s major sponsor is a way I can give something back to a great club which has given me so much pleasure over many years as a player,” Daniel said.
“I know, from a player’s perspective, just how great it is to get the chance to play AFL footy with your mates and you can’t get that chance unless someone helps pay the bills.
“Fortunately my business partner Jason shares the same philosophy as me, and together we are keen to see the Cooma Cats continue to bring AFL football to the Monaro and the Snowy Mountains,” he said.
Cooma Cats’ Club President Dave Paterson said the sponsorship deal with Dodd’s Hotel was critical to keeping the club on the field in season 2010.
“With Jason and Daniel coming on board, we can continue the club mission of not only keeping a senior team on the field each week, but more importantly, providing the opportunity for everyone in the community to either play, support of follow local Australian football,” Dave said.
Support for community-based AFL football was clearly demonstrated in Cooma in March this year with the staging of the second Cooma Cats’ Pre-Season Cup which attracted around 350 players, officials and supporters representing four women’s and six men’s senior teams from Canberra and the South Coast playing off in a day-long carnival on two fields at Nijong Oval.
“Dodd’s Hotel was a major sponsor for the Cup, and that sponsorship helped ensure the success of what is now a hugely popular pre-season competition for many regional AFL clubs,” Dave said. “It has put Cooma and the Snowy Mountains on the AFL football map.”
Running a community football club is an expensive business: costs include competition and registration fees, equipment, uniforms and insurances. Separately, a great deal of behind the scenes work is required by club volunteers.
“We are fortunate here in Cooma and the Snowy Mountains to have a handful of very loyal sponsors who help us out in many ways, and having Dodd’s Hotel now come on board as our major sponsor this year ensures AFL football remains accessible to everyone in the region,” Dave said.
The Cooma Cats play in the Canberra AFL Fourth Division with teams from Canberra, Yass, Goulburn and Cootamundra. The Cats also now field an Under 14s side in the AFL Canberra junior competition, and hopes to field an Under 12 and Under 16 side in the future.
“Through the support of all our sponsors, we are enabling more and more boys and girls to experience AFL football, and through this, all the benefits of team sports and healthy living,” Dave said.
