Cats celebrate their Ladies

The ladies of AFL on the Monaro and across the Snowy Mountains will be the guests of honour at Snowy Oval in Cooma this Saturday (22 May) when the Cooma Cats host their first AFL double-header of the 2010 season.
For the first time this year the Cats' junior side, the Under 14 SuperCats, will join their senior team-mates to play in consecutive matches at Snowy Oval in Cooma.
And the guests of honour will be the "Ladies of the Cooma Cats" who will enjoy being spoilt and pampered while they watch their sons, husbands, partners and friends take to the field.
Cooma Cats' Club President Dave Paterson said the club had decided to merge the club's annual "Ladies' Day" and the first double-header when both the juniors and senior sides play home games with AFL's "Pink Football Day" to make it a real family day.
The AFL's "Pink Football Day" is a nationally focused fund-raising event aimed at raising awareness of, and funds for, women's breast cancer research. To mark the day, the traditional red Sherrin football is replaced with a "pink" one and a number of fund raising events are held to raise much needed research funds.
Meanwhile, the Cooma Cats '"Ladies' Day" is held to thank the many mums, wives, partners and girlfriends who support the players through doing voluntary club administrative work, running the canteen, washing jumpers and providing transport.
And with some of the Cats' players based in Canberra, it is also an important day in helping the girls from Canberra and Cooma to get to know each other.
"The Cooma Cats are a family focused, community football club and the alignment of these three events fits nicely into our club philosophy. It will be a great day of local ALF footy and I encourage everyone to come along and see what we're all about, "Dave said.
"Our ladies are the unsung heroes of the footy club and through our 'Ladies' Day' they get to have a day off from their game-day duties, sit back, be pampered and enjoy watching the games," he said.
And having both the junior and senior sides playing at home this Saturday will be an added bonus.
"For a country footy club which spends a great deal of the season travelling, having the chance to have both our teams playing together at home is a great opportunity," Dave said.
"Not only does it provide the chance for both sides to support each other, but it gives the broader club, members, sponsors and supporters a chance to come and see both teams in action on the same day.
The next generation of Monaro and Snowy AFL stars will also get a chance to get involved with the club holding another of its successful Auskick Clinics for 6-12 year olds. An Auskick clinic will also be conducted allowing young boys and girls to get a feel for AFL footy, regardless of their skills or background. Senior Cats' players will be on hand to teach the youngsters what the game is all about.
"So this Saturday will be a great day for AFL on the Monaro and across the Snowy Mountains because it will be a real example of what the Cooma Cats' is all about - bringing AFL footy to everyone in the community for all to enjoy," Dave said.
